I collect tapes. I guess if you live in Los Angeles and have access to Burger Records and the absolute abundance of vintage swag and retro lifestyle enhancements that surround the city like cool man walls, then you'd understand my collection. I keep about 10 tapes at a time in my car: in the side doors, above the ashtray, even on the passenger seat while I'm cruising solo. But sometimes my precious tapes get a little exhausting after the fifteenth listen, front and back.

This morning, I did something I never do. I listened to KCRW's obnoxious morning show, "Morning Becomes Eclectic," hosted by "DJ" Jason Bentley. Morning Becomes Eclectic bothers me on so many levels. First of all, if by eclectic you mean hyper techno scream gaze and MTV's  latest rejects (okay, so sometimes he plays Tame Impala, which I guess I'm kind of into), then you just found your favorite radio show in LA. But considering the plethora of amazing radio stations our ears get the pleasure of listening to in this dreary place, Morning Becomes Eclectic is at best a mix between KROQ and KLXU's lamest show hosted by someone who only listens to KROQ.

Needless to say, I was literally mind blown on the way to work when I turned the station to KCRW and heard what sounded like System of a Down segue into this amazing, African sounding bass infused jam. I immediately thought the song sounded like Tinariwen, a Tuareg band from Mali, but just to be sure, I whipped out my iPhone and shazammed that shit. Turns out, homeboy's name is Bombino, a fellow Tuareg, from Agadez, Niger. And guess what, the ever ambitious Dan Auberbach of the Black Keys fucking produced the record. So there's that.

Bombino - Amidinine

Nomad was released in April 2013 on Nonesuch Records.
