I was at The Satellite (formerly Spaceland) in Silverlake last night for The Entrance Band's Thursday night residency show. I knew Dream Boys were opening for them, and Warren was DJing the show, so I wanted to go just based on that alone. I showed up solo, as I do for most shows I venture out to on school nights, walked in and headed straight for the bar, barely acknowledging the band on stage. But then I caught a glimpse of them, mainly a white guy with a huge beautiful brown afro playing harmonica in a way that instantly reminded me of Canned Heat. I ordered a Stella, and walked to the edge of the floor and took it all in.

Old Testament is a band I had never heard of until last night. The main mention of them on the Internet is that Jason Simon of Dead Meadow is the lead singer. But they're much more than just the ghost of Dead Meadows past.

I love Dead Meadow. My friend Stephen McCarty used to be their drummer. Jason Simon's uncle created my favorite television show ever, The Wire. But Old Testament is far from a follow up resurrection band.

Check out their tunes and see for yourself.
