Written by Chad and Carey Hayes and directed by James Wan, The Conjuring is about a family (with 5 daughters!) who moves into a haunted house in the middle of nowhere. Typical premise. But The Conjuring is based on an actual case study of real paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
In 1971, Roger and Carolyn Perron and their five daughters moved into an 18th century farmhouse in Harrisville, a small country town of Burrillville in Providence County, Rhode Island. Almost immediately, the family realized that something wasn't normal about the house.

According to Andrea Perron, the eldest of the five daughters, Ed and Lorraine Warren were brought to the Perron's by a paranormal group in Rhode Island who were aware of the curious happenings at the farmhouse. The Warrens also played key roles in the Amityville Horror Case.
There are obviously differences between the movie and the real haunting of the Perron family, which is why the Conjuring isn't a documentary. But if you feel like getting the shit scared out of you, go watch the movie. I highly recommend it.
