Random late night thought -

I just finished watching Mud, a film I've been meaning to see for quite some time now.

Starring Matthew McConaughey, who has been on a fucking roll lately (the Paperboy was maybe my favorite film that came out last year), Reese Witherspoon, Ray McKinnon from Deadwood, Sarah Paulson (Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene), Michael Shannon from Boardwalk Empire and Take Shelter, and the star of the film, in my opinion, Tye Sheridan, whose first role ever as an actor was in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life. Sheridan kills it.

The plot - Ellis (played by Sheridan) lives on a houseboat in Arkansas with his parents and helps his dad catch fish and sell it around town. One day he finds a boat caught up in the trees off an island down the river. He there encounters Mud (McConaughey), and the plot unravels.

Not into spoiling movies, so I'll leave it at that. But my point with the random thought: I haven't seen a movie I've liked this much in a long time, and right when the credits started rolling, the first name that came up was Jeff Nichols. Duh. Fucking Jeff Nichols.

Jeff Nichols wrote and directed two of my other favorite movies of all time, Take Shelter and Shotgun Stories, which both starred Michael Shannon. I admire Nichols on such a great level, it's hard to even explain. But if you like either of those movies, go see Mud. It blew me away.

The end.
